Yes, you could probably Chromecast from a phone app, but this isn't particularly bare bones nor elite. has conspired in the course of looking out for their own interests to make it a clusterf$%& when it comes to playing back content no matter whether you're going for a simple bare-bones way OR for an elite setup. I think the Shield is overrated if you're not using it for a server (and it isn't always the best server for everyone, even at the price point: overstock Alienware Alphas have been sold for not much more) most people would be perfectly fine with a current Roku or FireTV.īut the point stands that everyone involved in the PC architecture - from Intel, Microsoft*, Media companies, disc drive manufacturers, play back software publishers etc. It depends upon a lot of things, many of them arbitrary (like 4K discs being limited to DRM embedded in only the newest Intel chips).
